Maria Krull

My name is Maria Krull

I am a Swedish artist – born in Enköping in 1968 and have lived in both Lapland and Småland. I moved to Stockholm 1980 where I live with my family and our stray dog Tiger from Thailand. The world was my home and workplace for many years as a Project Manager in the aviation industry – however, Stockholm is my city and often a theme in my art.

Painting has always been my passion – I have drawn and painted as long as I can remember, and as a child, I loved Christmas presents that contained paint, paper, and brushes.
Over the years I have tried several mediums such as watercolour, gouache, and oil. Today, I mainly use acrylic and oil. Tools I usually work with are brush and palette knife.

I sold my first work of art in the summer of 2014 and began to think whether I should invest in the artistry. Said and done – I started producing a lot of works, created a website and engaged on social media. I received positive responses which strengthened my confidence.

Art is now an obvious part of my life and my paintings are in my mind most of the time – also when they are drying between layers or when I put them away to ”rest”. I often have 3-4 paintings ongoing – as they need to emerge at their own pace.

I paint women across time and space. The portraits must speak of something, radiate emotions, thoughts, movements, and hopefully awaken the same to the viewer. They can be both strong and vulnerable – depending on the context. I can have a personal idea of the message in my paintings, but there is no right or wrong – it is extremely interesting to hear how viewers interpret a painting.

Being a behaviorist I get inspirations from the many varieties of expressions a face can reveal – there must be a motion in the picture – that something is happening inside or outside of the object. Consistently the form of expression is subtle and dreamlike – like travel in time and space.

My technique vary depending on the object where brush strokes can go from subtle to rough and from brush to palette knife.

I would like to be perceived as an evolving and experimenting artist as I adapt to changes and varieties in the art world while keeping my footprint. I want my audience to visit my shows with curiosity and open minds. Every exhibition shall be a new experience.
